Antioxidant Power from Algae

Astaxanthin is emerging now as the most powerful antioxidant available today. You may have heard of it from Dr. Perricone’s book where he advocates making salmon an important part of your diet in order to enjoy its antioxidant, sun protection and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Forget Salmon!   Our astaxanthin is derived from Haematococcus pluvialis where its concentration is thousands of time greater and uncontaminated by heavy metals and pollutants associated with commercial breeding and where artificial astaxanthin is used.

Simply put, astaxanthin is a member of the carotenoid family which includes Beta-carotene, lycopene and zeaxanthin. Go to any health food store and you can get astaxanthin dietary supplements from algae to help you defend your skin’s DNA against environmental aging factors including U/V exposure.

Now the benefits of astaxanthin are available to defend your skin topically. When added to creams, oils or gels, it helps your skin in many ways to restore its youthful appearance. As an anti-inflammatory agent it reduces skin redness and calms down skin rashes and irritation. As an antioxidant, it supports your skin’s ability to defend itself from the sun’s ultra violet rays. It works by neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS)

Japanese studies also demonstrated that the anti-wrinkle properties of astaxanthin.   In a 2001 study conducted by Seki et al, female subjects experienced a reduction of wrinkles using a cream with astaxanthin. A dermatological assessment showed more. A reductions of puffiness around the eyes as well as a significant increase in skin hydration was observed after only 2 weeks.

Consider these facts: Here is how astaxanthin stacks up against other well-known antioxidants as a free radical scavenger of singlet oxygen molecules:

  • 65 times more powerful than vitamin C*
  • 54 times stronger than beta-carotene*
  • 800 times stronger than CoQ10*
  • 6,000 times greater than vitamin C*
  • 550 times more powerful than green tea catechins*

Astaxanthin was even found to be as much as 2.75 stronger than lutein with regard to singlet oxygen quenching.

Spa Technologies has been working with this wonder antioxidant over the past year now and has added it to a number of our products. Below is a list of products that contain it.

Oxygen Renewal: A triple layered approach to anti-aging. Each bottle contains a concentrate of actives that address all aspects of cellular health. Astaxanthin is found in the topmost ‘oil’ layer where it works to reduce inflammation and defend your skin’s DNA in association with Omega-7 and omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin C esters and Vitamin E. The middle layer has mineral-rich seaweed extracts, polypeptides and hyaluronic acid for super moisturization. The bottom layer is pure liquid oxygen to boost cellular metabolism and collagen synthesis.

Astaxanthin O2 Calming Gel: This oil-free formula is deep orange reflecting the high levels of astaxanthin. Ideal for sensitive skins, it supports normalizing conditions such as dermatitis, rosacea, etc. It is hydrating and non-greasy which men appreciate.   We have conducted an experiment to demonstrate astaxanthin’s anti-inflammatory and cooling properties (combined with liquid oxygen) when applied directly to the surface skin.   As the thermograph below shows, surface temperature is radically lowered within 60 seconds of application.
